How to Choose the Right Car Insurance Policy in the UAE?

vat

Car insurance in the UAE is mandatory for every vehicle on the road. You cannot register your car or renew its registration, without a valid policy. Driving without car insurance costs you an AED 500 fine and 4 black points on your licence. Yet most drivers still pick a policy in five minutes, based only on price. That is where claims go wrong. Here is a simple way to choose a policy that actually protects you.

What Types of Car Insurance Can You Buy in the UAE?

You can choose between two types of car insurance: third party and comprehensive. Third party car insurance is the minimum required by law. It covers injuries or damage you cause to others, but not your own car. According to the Central Bank of the UAE’s Unified Motor Policy, it must include up to AED 2 million for third-party property damage and up to AED 200,000 per person for death compensation. Comprehensive insurance includes all of this and also covers your own vehicle.

Feature Third Party Car Insurance Comprehensive Insurance
Legal status Mandatory minimum cover Optional
Damage to others Covered, up to AED 2 million for property damage Covered
Damage to your car Not covered Covered, including fire and theft
Best for Older, low-value cars New, financed or high-value cars

How Do You Decide Which Policy Is Right for You?

Start with your car’s value, not the premium. Then work through these five checks —

  1. Match the cover to the car. If your car is worth under AED 20,000–25,000, third party car insurance usually is enough. For newer or financed cars, go comprehensive.
  2. Check the repair type. Agency repairs send your car to the dealer’s workshop. Non-agency uses approved garages and is cheaper. Cars under 2–3 years old deserve agency repair.
  3. Read the excess (deductible). This is what you pay per claim. A low premium with a high excess can cost you more after one accident.
  4. Look at UAE-specific add-ons. Off-road cover if you dune bash, Oman/GCC cover if you drive to Salalah or Muscat, rent-a-car cover for repair days and natural calamity cover for heavy rain.
  5. Confirm the garage network. A policy is only as good as the workshops near your home in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah.

“Choosing a policy isn’t just about price, it’s about coverage breadth and post-accident ease,” says Toshita Chauhan, Chief Business Officer – General Insurance at Policybazaar.ae, who notes that premiums for similar cover can differ by up to AED 1,500 and agency repairs alone can save drivers up to AED 3,000 a year.

Which Mistakes Should You Avoid?

Most rejected claims in the UAE happen because of three common mistakes. First, people auto-renew without comparing policies. Second, they forget to use their No-Claim Discount certificate, which can lower their premium by 10 to 20 percent after each claim-free year. Third, some drivers do not declare how they use their car. For example, if you drive for a ride-hailing app but have a private policy, your claim could be denied.

What Is the Smart Way to Buy Car Insurance in the UAE?

Compare at least three quotes side by side before you pay. Check the insurer is licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE, read the exclusions page and keep your policy documents on your phone — traffic police can verify cover digitally. Platforms like Policybazaar.ae let you compare premiums, repair types and add-ons from multiple UAE insurers in one place, so the policy you pick is a decision, not a guess.
