The tallest architectural icon of Abu Dhabi is about to become a reality, as Sphere Abu Dhabi is gearing up to soar high on Yas Island, its exterior which will be covered with LED screens, will be able to be seen from the Sheikh Zayed Road and several parts of the UAE capital, as well as one of the city’s major bridges.
Announced by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the $1.7 billion Sphere Abu Dhabi will be the first Sphere outside the United States and only the second in the world, following the success of the Las Vegas venue that opened in 2023. Opened along with the other projects, the entertainment landmark will be located between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, and it is believed to be one of the most iconic landmarks of the emirate.
Massive LED Exosphere to Light up Abu Dhabi
Its iconic element will be an oversized LED display, called the Exosphere, that will functions as a giant, high-resolution canvas featuring high-tech capabilities for showcasing cultural art, live event promotions and immersive visual effects.
The UAE’s flat topography and the purity of the air in the desert will ensure that the glowing sphere can be detected from any distance from its location, thus providing a breathtaking new landmark for residents and visitors alike, DCT Abu Dhabi said. There are more Emirati artists involved in Sphere Abu Dhabi, where Emirati culture will be the main focus, as compared to the Las Vegas version. The authority is also to organise competitions for that encourage school as well as university subjects to showcase their work on what is one of the world’s biggest digital screens.
Immersive Storytelling Inspired by the UAE
In the space, they will see a wrap around exhibit with state-of-the-art spatial sound and visuals, with a 160,000 sq. ft. exhibit space. The immersive setting will let viewers immerse themselves in stories and not just watch. The potential productions may include a tour of the UAE’s pearl diving history, the oil exploration and formation of the UAE’s nationhood in 1971, and the UAE’s future in space exploration. The aim is to develop experiences which are not offered in cinema, theatre or theme park, the Department of Culture and Tourism said.
Built Around Emirati Identity
The technology is similar to the Las Vegas Sphere, but Dubai officials emphasized that the project will be built with an Emirati identity. The venue will be set within the entertainment epicenter of Yas Island. It will have a mix of world-class productions and locally-inspired attractions that celebrate the UAE’s history, art and its natural world.
Overall, the project will support Abu Dhabi’s commitment of reaching its sights of becoming a world-class center of culture, creativity and entertainment.
