A man who tried to bring heroin into the UAE hidden in the body inside capsules was arrested at Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport.
During routine checks at the airport, customs officials became put out by the African national traveller and suspected that he was involved in drug trafficking, authorities said. The passenger was subsequently put through more stringent checks and taken to a hospital for a medical assessment.
Subsequent examination by the doctors was hastened by finding foreign bodies in the suspect’s body. Officials recovered 1,418g of cocaine in total after they performed a medical procedure. Officials seized 100 capsules of cocaine weighing a total of 1,418g after a medical operation. The accused was then turned over to the concerned authority with the drugs to proceed against him.
It was conducted in coordination with the General Directorate of Ports (GDP), under the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) and the National Anti-Narcotics Authority. They said the case demonstrated the efficiency of the UAE customs examination systems and the capabilities of its officers in identifying some sophisticated smuggling techniques.
Authorities also admired the coordination between the operational units and anti-narcotics agencies, underlining UAE’s objective to bolster border security and drug trafficking attempts.
