Plans to attack Khartoum International Airport were carried out by a Sudanese drone and not by a UAE one, the UAE has said after Sudan made an unsubstantiated claim that an Emirati drone was involved in a recent attack on the airport.
In a statement to reporters on Wednesday, a UAE official said the nation “witnessed that the Port Sudan Authority (PSA) is raising false charges.”
The official said that such statements “are chipping away” at efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan and bring stability back to the region.
“The allegations form part of a concerted smear campaign to distract from its own wrongdoings, in the hope it can wash its hands of those misdeeds,” the statement said, referring to the PSA’s attempts to shift blame to external agencies.
UAE also pointed out the claims had been launched to delay efforts towards peace in Sudan and prolong the insurgency.
UAE pressured the PSA to concentrate on addressing the humanitarian situation that has developed as a result of the ongoing civil war between Sudanese and non-Sudanese forces and the resolution of the violence, as opposed to being used as an “international platform”, that the UAE warned, might be “misused by the Sudanese authorities”.
A BBC report states that on Monday, Khartoum International Airport and other military installations in Greater Khartoum were attacked. There were no casualties reported.
According to Reuters, citing allegedly military sources, the accusations were related to drones allegedly launched from Bahir Dar airport in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has also refuted the claims.
Sudan has been experiencing a violent civil conflict since April of 2023, with violence spreading across the nation from the opposing factions.
