The Wegovy pill, the once-daily oral semaglutide tablet available in the UAE, is prescribed for weight management. It contains semaglutide, the active ingredient in the weekly Wegovy injection, in tablet form.
On 1 June 2026, the Emirates Drug Establishment approved the Wegovy pill for long-term weight management. The approval covers adults living with obesity, and adults with overweight and weight-related medical conditions. The UAE was the second country to authorise it.
The Wegovy pill comes with specific instructions about when and how to take it. Following them closely affects how much of the medication the body absorbs.
How to take the Wegovy pill each morning
The tablet is taken first thing in the morning, once a day, on an empty stomach. It is swallowed whole with no more than half a cup of plain water, which is around 120 mL. After taking it, you need to wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else or taking other oral medications.
In practice, breakfast, coffee and other morning tablets are delayed until at least half an hour after the Wegovy pill.
A few habits can make the routine easier to maintain. Keeping a small measuring cup beside the tablets helps you stay within the water limit. Taking the tablet before showering or getting ready for work allows the 30 minutes to pass as part of the normal morning routine.
Why the Wegovy pill needs an empty stomach
Only a small part of each tablet is absorbed. The UK product information for Wegovy tablets states that around 1% to 2% of the dose is absorbed. It adds that food or a large volume of water reduces absorption further.
The water limit and the waiting time exist for this reason. Taking the tablet with breakfast, or with a full glass of water, can reduce the amount of semaglutide that reaches the bloodstream. Over weeks of treatment, consistently lower absorption may reduce the effect of the medication.
Planning other morning medications around the Wegovy pill
Other morning tablets, such as thyroid medication, blood pressure tablets or vitamins, need to be planned around the Wegovy pill. The UK product information describes an interaction study in which five other tablets taken at the same time reduced semaglutide absorption by around a third.
The product information also reports that exposure to levothyroxine, a common thyroid medication, rose by 33%. Your doctor may therefore check your thyroid hormone levels during treatment. An oral contraceptive was not affected in these studies.
Levothyroxine has timing rules of its own. The label for Euthyrox, a levothyroxine brand, advises taking it on an empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast. If you take both medications, your doctor or pharmacist can help you plan the order and timing.
Missed doses and dose steps
If a morning dose is missed, the UK product information advises skipping it. The next dose is then taken as usual the following day. When travelling across time zones, your doctor or pharmacist can help you keep the routine.
Treatment starts at the lowest dose and increases in steps of at least 30 days. The available doses are 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg. Your doctor will decide with you when to move to the next dose, depending on your progress and any side effects.
Semaglutide has a half-life of around one week. Its levels in the body become steady after around four to five weeks of daily dosing at the same dose.
Switching from the Wegovy injection to the pill
Some patients move from the weekly Wegovy injection to the tablet. The UK product information describes moving from the weekly 2.4 mg injection to the daily 25 mg tablet, starting one week after the last injection. Your doctor will plan any switch, taking into account how well the injection worked and how you tolerated it.
Results and side effects to expect
A Phase 3 clinical trial called OASIS 4 studied the Wegovy pill in adults with obesity or overweight. After 64 weeks, participants on the highest dose had lost around 17% of their body weight on average. Roughly one participant in three lost 20% or more. Individual results vary.
Digestive side effects are very common, particularly while the dose is being increased. The UK product information describes them as mostly mild to moderate and short-lived, although constipation can last longer. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are among the symptoms reported.
If side effects are difficult to manage, your doctor can adjust the pace of dose increases. The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) advises seeking urgent help if severe pain in the stomach area spreads to the back and continues.
For patients with type 2 diabetes who take insulin or a sulfonylurea, adding a GLP-1 medication can raise the chance of low blood sugar. These treatments may need adjusting when the Wegovy pill is started.
Women planning a pregnancy should discuss timing with their doctor. The MHRA advises that semaglutide is stopped at least two months before a planned pregnancy.
Taking the Wegovy pill during Ramadan
Ramadan changes the timing of meals. The morning routine therefore needs adjusting. In 2022, diabetes specialists from the UAE and the wider region recommended that oral semaglutide be taken at iftar during Ramadan. Taking the tablet at iftar still means waiting before eating, in line with the product instructions. Your doctor can help you plan the timing before Ramadan begins.
A routine that supports medical supervision
The Wegovy pill is prescribed alongside changes to diet and physical activity, not as a replacement for them. At follow-up appointments, your doctor will review your dose, side effects and progress.
No one should start a GLP-1 medication on their own initiative. A doctor’s review is important to check that the treatment is safe and appropriate for the person taking it.
